As we celebrate 65 years of success, we are incredibly proud to recognise Om Sharma as a shining star of Melville Senior High School’s Alumni for his remarkable academic achievements, contributions to youth, and our state.
We are proud to announce that our Class of 2022 Gifted and Talented graduate Om Sharma is one of the four Youth Week WA Ambassadors selected to represent young people for Youth Week WA ‘Our Threads, This Place, Your Moment’.
With over 100 youth events in the school holidays over 10 to 17 April 2025, it is the biggest celebration of young people in Western Australia that offers opportunities for young people to connect and develop their skills.
After winning an Academic Excellence Award in Year 10, an International Writing for Future Problem Solving competition, AMPOL All-rounder Award, ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award and Cultural Award in Year 12, Om deferred his Communications degree offer from UWA and landed a summer work experience graduate role in the Department of Communities in Walyalup, Fremantle.
At the Department of Communities Om learnt about public relations, media campaigns, and communications while working in the Corporate Communications team.
In 2024, Om was promoted to Communications Officer and acted as the Ministerial Youth Advisory Council providing advice to the Minister for Youth, Hon. Hannah Beazley MLA on a variety of government initiatives and programs, including the WA Youth Action Plan 2024-2027.
Om continues working with the Department of Communities while completing a Deakin University online public relations course.
I’m lucky to be working in a job I love surrounded by an amazing team who I learn from every day.
Youth Week WA – Our Threads, This Place, Your Moment
The theme for Youth Week WA ‘Our Threads, This Place, Your Moment’, is centred on young people’s connection with community, each other and themselves, that no matter how small, that when sewn together‘ they form a patchwork’ of contributions that form the ‘rich tapestry’ of Western Australia.
The theme for 2025 was decided by 13 diverse young people that make up the Youth Week WA Planning Committee.
The Department of Communities also invited nominations from young people interested in being the future leader of Youth Week WA as Ambassadors.
