New $9.8 million Sports Hall and STEM classrooms unveiled

From 2025, students at Melville Senior High School will access state of the art facilities and equipment for specialised sporting and STEM programs providing the tools they need to excel in all fields.

A new architecturally designed sporting and science facility unveiled today by the Minister for Education Hon. Dr Tony Buti, is equipped with state-of-the-art features with advanced technologies and amenities including a full-sized basketball court, fitness centre, gymnasium, storage rooms and classrooms.

In addition to the Sports Hall, two classrooms and planning room will serve as a hub for Health Science and Physical Education classes.

This significant development marks a new era in our commitment to providing top-tier sporting, and educational opportunities for our students.

Melville Senior High School is recognised as a top performing high school in Health and Physical Education and is among the top 5 in School Sport WA’s McMahon Shield for interschool sport. 

The Sports Hall with a sprung timber floor playing surface provides the perfect training ground and dynamic space for our specialist Netball Program, basketball, volleyball and badminton. Adjacent to the Sports Hall, a new beach volleyball site offers a stunning sand base for outdoor sports carnivals and competitions.

These significant additions to our school will greatly enhance our students’ learning experiences.

We are excited to see the positive impact they will have on our school community.

Melville Senior High School students have achieved 12 Subject Exhibition Awards and Certificates of Excellence over the past 9 years, including 7 awards for the Top Performing Health Studies students in Western Australia. 

The official opening ceremony was attended by Lisa O’Malley MLA, Member for Bicton, Kim Giddens MLA, Member for Bateman, City of Melville Lord Mayor Ms Katy Mair, Sue Cuneo, Director of Education, Kylie Bottcher, Assistant Director of Education from the South Metropolitan Regional Education Office as well as representatives from our School Board and P&C Committee.

Construction of the innovative building began in September 2023 with Byte Construct Pty Ltd using Cox Architects design.

The external artwork represented the energy and movement of the human body.
